EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
