Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals buying such medications should be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Doctors believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the amplified regain.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs report a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," described an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
